Watch the video

(Updated 9/24/18)

A team of dedicated BART workers has completed a major rebuilding project for one of the most critical pieces of track in the entire system. The work happened over four weekends between the 19th Street and West Oakland Stations. All of that work resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • 3 turnouts removed and replaced, including ballast and grading.
  • 337 wood ties replaced with concrete ties.
  • Removed and installed 1,630 feet of new 3rd rail and coverboard.
  • Welded 34 joints.
  • Removed and installed 3,320 rail pads.
  • Removed and replaced 3,500 feet of rail.
  • Replaced 27 train control loops.
  • Installed 4,800 feet of 34.5Kv conduit.
  • Installed 7,200 feet of 34.5Kv cable.
  • All 4 platform edges renewed at MacArthur Station.

The work was supported by voter-approved Measure RR bond funds. Now our riders can enjoy the benefits of enhanced reliability along a stretch of track that’s used for every transbay trip provided by BART.

Weekend shutdown map

9/22-9/23 is the final weekend of this work.

We will be making major repairs on the track and other infrastructure between 19th Street and West Oakland stations. Here is a pdf of the map.

AC Transit will provide free bus service between the stations. The trip should take 10-15 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: BART's regular schedule/timetables and QuickPlanner results will NOT reflect actual service because of this work.  Use our Real Time Departures feature instead- it provides information on when the next train is coming/leaving.

Trains in the East Bay will run at least every 20 minutes between Richmond and Warm Springs and Antioch and Dublin. All transfers, including to the bus for service to West Oakland (to catch trains to the West Bay) should be made at 19th Street Station. The West Bay service to San Bruno will be every 10 minutes and to SFO/Millbrae every 20 minutes.

Trains will not run between West Oakland and Lake Merritt and West Oakland and 19th Street.  Frequent buses will be provided instead at 19th St. Station.

The work will take place on the following dates: 8/4-5, 8/25-26, Labor Day Weekend 9/1-3, and 9/22-23. Labor Day is a holiday and trains will run on a modified Sunday schedule with longer trains and some extra trains for the As game. On Sunday 9/2 and Monday 9/3 the first train from Colma (7:57am) to Antioch is cancelled. 8:18am will be the first train from Colma to Antioch.

Please be aware there will be limited parking at West Oakland during these weekends.

We will stage equipment and supplies on 4th Street between Washington Street and Martin Luther King Way, there will be lights and noise during the work weekends.

This work is made possible through voter-approved Measure RR bond funds. We know that this work will temporarily inconvenience you. We appreciate your patience.

MacArthur tile work

During these weekends we will also replace the platform tiles at MacArthur station.

Because of the bus bridge, any riders who wish to transfer trains to San Francisco should stay on their train until 19th Street, take the free bus to West Oakland, and board a train to the West Bay there. If coming from San Francisco and you want to transfer for any East Bay destination, please also do so at 19th Street.

Riders coming from Antioch and transfering to Richmond or Warm Springs, should still transfer at MacArthur.
